Radionuclides in medicine

Radionuclides have been used routinely in medicine for more than 60 years. Nuclear medicine uses radiation to provide information about the functioning of a person's specific organs to diagnose or treat disease. The radionuclides used in medicine have half-lives ranging from a few minutes to several days to minimise the patient's radiation dose.

Students will:

  • use MS Excel to construct simple graphs of decay of three unknown medical radionuclides
  • use their graph to calculate the half-life of the radionuclides
  • determine the identity and use of each radionuclide using the background information provided.

Wombat - High-Intensity Powder Diffractometer

Wombat is a high intensity neutron diffractometer that  is primarily used as a high-speed powder diffractometer, but has also expanded into texture characterisation and single-crystal measurement, particularly diffuse scattering.

Updates on developments in small modular reactor technologies

There have been significant developments in small modular reactor technologies in 2022. The International Atomic Energy Agency expects small modular reactors (SMRs) to make an important contribution to achieving global climate goals and energy supply security. But with more than 70 SMR designs under development in 18 countries – including innovative reactors that are yet to be licensed and novel methods of modular manufacturing that are new to the nuclear industry – widely deploying SMRs in time remains a tall task.
