Redefining measurements
ANSTO is part of collaboration conducting experiments to redefine the kilogram linking it to a fundamental constant of nature.
Australia is home to one of the world’s best nuclear reactors
Over the past 70 years ANSTO has been building Australia’s nuclear expertise and despite being small in scale, today we are complex and sophisticated nuclear nation.

Radiation Services
ANSTO has over 35 years' experience in providing radiation safety management with teams offering radiation consultancy, instrument calibration and radiation safety training tailored to our clients' needs.
Powerful mathematical calculations guide the startup of a nuclear reactor
The nuclear analysis team at ANSTO recently had a significant role in the re-design and optimisation of a cold neutron source facility for the reactor, its installation and the subsequent restart after a six-month shutdown.
Australian Nuclear Association recognises former manager of nuclear reactor and waste operations
The Australian Nuclear Association (ANA) has awarded Lubi Dimitrovski, former Manager, ANSTO Waste Operations (1995-2012) and former General Manager Nuclear Operations (2013-2018), its Award for 2022 in recognition of his leadership role in radioactive waste management in Australia.

Year in review
Today we celebrate 65 years since the official opening of Australia’s first nuclear research reactor in 1958
ANSTO is celebrating the official opening of HIFAR, Australia’s first nuclear reactor, sixty-five years ago.
ANSTO facilities and expertise supply a large range of radioisotopes for radiopharmaceutical and environmental applications
Excellent radiolabelling facilities and the operation of OPAL, a world-class multi-purpose nuclear reactor, enable ANSTO to produce a large range of radioisotopes for Australian researchers in both radiopharmaceutical and environmental areas.

Role at ANSTO

Radioisotopes
Using the OPAL multipurpose reactor,, ANSTO can provide a diverse suite of radioisotopes for research and applications

Physical Properties Measurement System
System includes a vibrating-sample magnetometer, AC susceptibility, heat capacity and resistivity measurement capability.

Capabilities
The Biosciences group of researchers at ANSTO supports the development and translation of radiopharmaceuticals to improve human health.

Nuclear medicine processing and distribution
ANSTO’s nuclear medicine processing and distribution facility assembles, loads, tests and distributes a range of nuclear medicine products, including Mo-99. The Mo-99 is dispensed into an ANSTO radiopharmaceutical Gentech® Generator where it decays to Tc-99m.
Graduate Institute
The Graduate Institute is part of ANSTO’s Innovation Precinct and links all graduates together to create a network of Australia’s brightest young minds focused on the future.
German dignitary visits
