United Uranium Scholarship - Guidelines
Supporting Promising Young Scientists in the Field of Nuclear Energy
The United Uranium Trust Fund was established in 1966 for ‘the promotion and encouragement of scientific research and education in the field of atomic energy’. In accordance with the Deed, the United Uranium Scholarship is awarded to ‘promising young scientists’ from any Australian organisation or institution whose research or work is in the field of nuclear energy. Perpetual Trustee Company Limited is the Trustee for the United Uranium Trust Fund.
The scholarship recognises outstanding ability and promise in the field of nuclear science and technology, specifically as it applies to nuclear energy. Successful applicants will demonstrate a history of interest in nuclear energy and a desire to continue this interest.
Where possible, it is intended that the scholarship will be awarded annually.
Eligibility
The scholarship is open to ‘promising young scientists’ in the field of nuclear energy who want to extend their development in nuclear science and technology and who work/study in an Australian organisation or institution. The applicant must also be an Australian citizen.
The scholarship’s value
The recipient(s) of the scholarship will receive up to the value of AUDS$6,000.
Previous Winners
Perpetual Trustee Company Limited has awarded scholarships in previous years for example for attendance at the:
- International School in Nuclear Engineering
- World Nuclear University Summer Institute
- International Nuclear Youth Congress
- presentation at conferences e.g. International Conference on Plasma Physics, or
- Visit to research laboratory for collaboration in nuclear science and technology
Application for the Scholarship
Each applicant must lodge a completed Application Form, including the required attachments, and address the criteria set out in Section 2 in the ‘Terms and Conditions’ by the close-of-entries date. Closing date of entries for the 2024 scholarship is 11 August 2024.

Terms and Conditions
1. About the Scholarship
The United Uranium Scholarship is intended to develop ‘promising young scientists in the field of atomic energy’ at an institution agreed to by the trustees.
Perpetual Trustee Company Limited ABN 42 000 001 007 is the Trustee of the scholarship. The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO – formerly known as the Australian Atomic Energy Commission) on behalf of the Trustee, will:
- Organise the scholarship
- Convene a panel to judge the applicants; and
- Submit the panel’s recommendation to the Trustee.
The scholarship is awarded by the Trustee based on the application that is judged to be of the highest merit. The scholarship will be awarded annually where possible and the recipient will receive up to $6,000. The Trustee may, in its absolute discretion, refrain for any period and for any reason from the awarding of the scholarship. The Trustee also reserves the right to amend these rules and conditions from time to time, provided that any such amendment shall not in any way affect any scholarship already awarded pursuant to these rules and conditions.
2. Criteria for Applicants
Each Applicant must fulfil the following conditions and requirements.
- Be working or studying in a science-related discipline in the field of nuclear energy
- Be an Australian citizen
- Lodge a completed Application Form, including the required attachments
- Attach the following documentation to the application form:
- A written and signed reference in direct support of the application from the applicant’s CEO/Dean or equivalent; and
- Photocopies certified by a Justice of the Peace or solicitor to be a true copy of the original of:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or certificates; and
- Proof of Australian Citizenship (eg Australian birth certificate; Passport or Australian Citizenship Certificate) - Certification to be dated no later than 6 months prior to closing of entries date.
- Attach a written statement to the application form which addresses the following criteria in 500 words or less:
- Current employment in a science-related discipline in the nuclear industry or engagement in advanced nuclear studies in the field of nuclear energy;
- Sound knowledge of nuclear fundamentals;
- Being in the early stages of a career in the nuclear industry;
- Holding of a degree in a science, engineering, or business-related discipline or having significant relevant nuclear energy experience;
- Academic or professional excellence;
- How the nominated development opportunity has educational merit and will extend their knowledge of nuclear energy;
- An outline of the costs associated with the nominated development opportunity;
- Commitment to continue in the industry at least in the next 5 years.

ANSTO Research Office
- Judging is based entirely on material submitted by the Applicant by the closing date of entries. No additional material will be accepted after this date. Please note that insufficient or incomplete applications will be automatically rejected. The judges, at their discretion, may request further clarification of material if required.
- ANSTO, as Organiser, will collate all applications and select Judges to assess the applications on their merit. There will be no interviews for the scholarship. The Judges will make a recommendation to the Trustee as to the Applicant, if any, that they consider best addresses the criteria with demonstrated outstanding ability and promise in the field of nuclear science. The Trustee’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into with Applicants.
3. Important Information for Applicants
- No receipt of applications will be issued to Applicants.
- Emailed applications in PDF format including additional references are preferred
- As soon as practicable after the Judges have considered the eligible applications received, and approval has been given by the Trustee, results will be mailed to each Applicant at the address provided on the application form. The successful Applicant will be contacted directly.
- It is anticipated that the winner will be announced in September 2024.
- Applicants are strongly advised to retain a copy of their application and not to forward the only copy of any material. No material will be returned to Applicants.
- It is an Applicant’s responsibility to keep the Organiser advised of any changes to their contact details during the judging process using the address set out above.
- The award winner agrees to be identified in ANSTO promotion of the United Uranium Scholarship award (see Section 6). The award winner may be requested to provide background information which can be used in the promotion of the United Uranium Scholarship on ANSTO’s website and social media channels according terms outlined in the United Uranium Scholarship Privacy Collection Notice.
- The award winner agrees to provide the Organiser with a summary report (minimum 1000 words) outlining the benefits that the nominated development opportunity provided. This report is to be received within 3 months after completion of the development opportunity.
4. Value and Tenure of Scholarship
- Each scholarship is for a period of one year.
- The scholarship monies must be expended in total by the end of the following financial year to the award and for the development opportunity stated in the application form.
5. Cancellation of Scholarships
5.1 Any failure to use the scholarship monies for the approved application will lead to automatic cancellation of the scholarship and a requirement that the winner of the scholarship reimburse the Trustee in full within 60 days of the date of cancellation. The recipient may submit a written request for change of scope due to exceptional circumstances to the Organiser who will table with the United Uranium Scholarship Review Panel and the Trustee for consideration. If this request is not approved, cancellation of the scholarship will follow, as above.
5.2 The unpaid balance of any Scholarship may, at the absolute discretion of the Trustee, be forfeited in the event of any of the following occurring:
- The death of a winner;
- The winner not fulfilling any conditions which may be attached to the terms of her/his Scholarship; or
- The winner for any reason whatever being prevented from continuing her/his development opportunity unless a variation is approved by the United Uranium Scholarship Review Panel and the Trustee.
5.3 In the case of fraudulent behaviour on the part of the winner, the Trustee, at its discretion, may request that all scholarship monies that have been paid to that winner be returned to the Trust.
6. Publicity and Promotion
By applying to be considered for this Award, each Applicant agrees that the Trustee and Organiser may use any material to further advertise, support and in other ways publicise the United Uranium Scholarship (see United Uranium Scholarship Privacy Collection Notice) . Involved parties will be notified by email of any such use.
