ANSTO welcomes revitalised National Science and Research Priorities and National Science Statement
(ANSTO) has welcomed the launch of the new National Science Statement and revitalised National Science and Research Priorities by Minister for Industry and Science, The Hon Ed Husic MP and Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley AO PSM.
Environmental Protection
ANSTO is committed to minimising the environmental impact of its activities and to implementing strategies which have a positive effect on the environment. The ANSTO Work Health Safety and Executive Committee oversees this process.
Oil and Gas Decommissioning
With more than 50 years of experience in monitoring natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in the environment, ANSTO can provide the crucial data and insights you need to assist with the planning and risk management associated with oil and gas decommissioning.
Work with us
ANSTO drives Australian innovation through partnerships designed to respond to the needs of industry. Get in touch to discuss business opportunities today.
Little forest legacy site
ANSTO is responsible for the Little Forest Legacy Site (LFLS) located within the ANSTO Buffer Zone boundary. This site, formerly known as the Little Forest Burial Ground (LFBG), was used by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC) during the 1960’s to dispose of waste containing low levels of radioactivity and beryllium oxide (non-radioactive) in a series of shallow trenches. There has been regular monitoring of the site since 1966 and the results have been reported in ANSTO’s environmental monitoring reports.
Collaborative agreement combines extensive scientific infrastructure and expertise
Environmental conference highlights the role isotopes have in better supporting our precious ecosystems
Science Series Webinars
The ANSTO Science Series is a live and virtual meet-up that focuses on the key capacities of ANSTO’s people, partners and facilities and how they are meeting global challenges in sustainable industries, medicine, advanced manufacturing and in accelerating small business.
What World Environment Day means to our scientists
Environment
Unique landmark instrumentation and expertise are a hallmark of ANSTO’s sovereign capability, unavailable anywhere else in Australia. Our ability to identify the source of hazardous particulates in air, the age of water in aquifers and the detailed chemistry of toxic elements in complex soil and biota specimens are just some examples of ANSTO capability.
Science supports species survival by tackling contaminants and developing ingenious approaches
Radiation biology
In space, without the protection of the magnetosphere, the type and dose of radiation is considerably different to what is naturally experienced on earth.

ANSTO experts on radioactivity present at IAEA training course for Pacific Island states
ANSTO experts in the measurement of radioactivity and its impacts on the marine environment presented at an IAEA training course for representatives from Pacific Island countries held in early December.
Jack the Super Prawn
Jack the Super Prawn lives in the Barrier Reef and uses his powers to protect the environment. With JackVac, he cleans up rubbish and impurities in seawater. With JackCopter, he soars high into the air, where you wouldn't normally see a prawn. Of course, powers like that help Jack find and clear up waste plastic. But Jack's main job is to educate young readers.
Bushfires can generate hazardous chromium in soil
Bushfires heat soil to extreme temperatures and this causes oxidation of chromium to a highly toxic and carcinogenic form.
CORIS360® advanced radiation imaging solution
CORIS360 delivers fast, accurate radiation detection and imaging, making invisible radiation visible to improve safety and decision making in radioactive environments.
Giving waste plastics a second life as high-performance materials
A new study has shown that, rather than being discarded, plastics can be transformed into valuable carbon nanomaterials that help solve both energy and environmental challenges.
