Operations

Accelerator Operators operate the synchrotron and its subsystems 24 hours a day, six days a week, and maintain the accelerator reliability KPIs set by ANSTO management.  They use the myriad of diagnostic tools available in the accelerator to diagnose and troubleshoot faults as they occur and are engaged in a variety of projects to increase reliability and reduce downtime.

Outside of business hours, operators assist beamline users with support for sample handling and troubleshooting beamline equipment.  Operators field more than 800 calls from users every year and resolve more than 90% of all support requests without contacting a beamline scientist for assistance.

Statistics

The operations group is responsible for the accelerator KPIs.  They are:

  • Availability > 97%
  • Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) > 66 hours
  • Mean Down Time < 2 hours

These KPIs are reported on both 16-week and 12-month rolling averages.

The following plots are accurate up until March 2024.

Yearly Scheduled and Delivered Data
Yearly MTBF and MDT
Yearly Downtime and Faults

Projects

Operators are continuously working towards improving the efficiency, reducing down times and maintaining availability of the synchrotron radiation to users above 98%.
