Ballarat residents can discover the science behind email, and whether or not they can separate the Fact from the Fiction when it comes to the internet.
The World Wide Web will collide with science in a 90 minute Fact or Fiction show, where the audience will watch popular internet clips and vote on whether what they saw was science fact or pure science fiction.
Once the audience voting has been locked in, a panel of scientists from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will critique the science featured and reveal the answer.
Fact or Fiction has been designed to be both entertaining and educational, and is a national roadshow aimed at those who aren’t necessarily interested in science.
“Every day most people use a device to connect to the Internet, and we will be teaching people both about the mechanics of what that involves, and how to critique the content they consume through the lens of science,” said ANSTO’s Rod Dowler.
“Fact or Fiction 2.0 is a great opportunity for the whole family to come along, and have a guess about the science that is part of day-to-day life.
“Amongst other things we will be discussing whether the internet is eating your memory, and hypothesising about where the internet will be in 2025.”
As part of the show’s interactive format, the audience is asked to bring their own devices with WiFi capability to connect to the venue's WiFi, this can include smartphones, tablets and laptops.
