Today the Institute held a farewell lunch for Shane Kennedy, who is commencing a secondment into a leadership position at the $1.8B European Spallation Source.
Shane originally came to Lucas Heights as an AINSE scientist in 1990, to support users of the HIFAR reactor, and he has been a key leader in the neutron scattering effort continuously since then.
Perhaps his greatest achievement has been in specifying the magnificent facilities at the OPAL reactor, and particularly its large high-performance guides, the cold source, and the laboratory and other facilities included in the reactor contract.
He played a key leadership role in construction of both the first wave of instruments (2000-2007) and in the more recent second wave (2009-2015) funded by the Super-Science Initiative.
We wish him very well in Sweden, and will feel a great sense of loss while he is gone.
