2024 Eureka Prizes winners announced
After hundreds of hours of deliberation, the 2024 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes winners have been revealed.
Congratulations to the 19 individuals and teams recognised across the categories of Research & Innovation, Leadership, Science Engagement and School Science.
We are pleased to announce the winner of the ANSTO sponsored, Innovative Use of Technology Award for 2024, Associate Professor Aaron McFadyen, Queensland University of Technology for his innovative work in the fastest growing sector of aviation, drones.
Winner: Associate Professor Aaron McFadyen
Associate Professor Aaron McFadyen, Queensland University of Technology, has developed new world-leading drone management technologies. In collaboration with aviation authorities and industry, these technologies are now embedded in automated flight planning, assessment and approval processes for drone operations. This has enhanced safety, efficiency and utilisation of airspace in Australia and overseas.
Finalist: UNSW Night Time Solar
The UNSW Night Time Solar Team has demonstrated groundbreaking technology that allows for the generation of solar power even at night, tapping into the energy radiated from the Earth’s surface as it cools down after sunset. The key is a semiconductor device that harnesses thermal infrared radiation to produce electricity.
About the Eureka Prizes
The nation’s most comprehensive science awards will this year offer a total of 18 prizes across the categories of Research and Innovation, Leadership, Science Engagement and School Science. Featuring the ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology, these awards have recognised and celebrated some of Australia’s brightest minds and game-changing innovations.
Established in 1990, 508 Eureka Prizes and more than $4.5 million in prizes money have been awarded since they started. ANSTO has supported the Australian Museum for the Eureka Prizes awards since 2011.
Presented annually in partnership with some of the nation's leading scientific institutions, government organisations, universities, and corporations, the Eureka Prizes raise the profile of science and science engagement in the community by celebrating outstanding achievement.
