Elements in the 21st Century Competition Summary and Results

During April 2024, Australian school students of all ages were invited to combine chemistry and creativity in our new competition, Elements in the 21st Century. The competition encouraged students to research chemical elements, choose a favourite, then design an artwork on paper that showcases how their element is used in the 21st century.

The competition was popular among primary and secondary students and 380 entries were received from students ranging in age from Year 1 to Year 10. Entries were received from NSW, QLD, SA, VIC, and WA.

The judges were impressed with the diverse range of elements represented and techniques demonstrated, as well as the creative uses of colour and design. Finalists were selected based on creativity, execution, their ages for younger participants, and the correctness of the information they provided about their element. Although the second letters of element symbols should be lowercase, the judges made an allowance for younger students using capital letters for two-letter symbols.

The winning primary and secondary students will each receive an elements themed prize pack worth over $200. Two runners-up in each category will receive a set of ANSTO atom family ‘plushies’. Students selected as finalists will receive a personalised certificate of high achievement. Online galleries of the 50 primary finalists and 40 secondary finalists will be available soon.

We congratulate all students who extended their learning about elements by participating in this unique competition and give special thanks to the teachers who encouraged their students to get involved. Entries were received from individuals and the following schools:Birmingham Primary School (Mt Evelyn, VIC), Esperance Primary School (WA), Fish Creek District Primary School (VIC), Sapphire Coast Anglican College (Bega, NSW), Trinity Grammar School (Strathfield, NSW) and University High School (Parkville, VIC).

Further information on the competition requirements and an element artwork example are available on the website.
