Gold Standard for Conferences

ANSTO’s commitment to Diversity and Inclusion extends to all events we host or conferences we support through sponsorship, expertise (presenting/speaking) or staff attendance as delegates.

ANSTO Executives have committed to the Panel Pledge. The Panel Pledge is a visible and vocal commitment to inclusive events; Pledgers use their position as invited speakers and panellists to proactively enquire about gender representation and inclusion prior to accepting invitations; and make their attendance conditional upon events adequately representing the gender balance of the field.

We have implemented the following Gold Standard at all ANSTO events and conferences; and proactively challenge organisers of events we support to uphold the same standard:

  • Diverse representation of speakers, presenters, and panellists – with meaningful contribution opportunities provided to those groups underrepresented within the field.

  • Highlight and hold meaningful discussions of diversity and inclusion issues relevant to the field.

  • A safe space for discussion and learning which is inclusive and respectful.

  • Clearly articulated behavioural standards and designated reporting/complaints information.

  • Actively consider the needs of attendees and proactively take practical steps to removing barriers to participation.

Requirements for participation in conferences

Any conference organisers are required to document how they plan to deliver on the commitments set out below as well as report back after the conclusion of the conference, if they expect participation from ANSTO employees.

There should be a stated commitment by the conference organising committee to achieving representation of the whole community that is published before registrations open.  This should be disseminated and upheld by all involved in organising sessions and inviting speakers.

There must be a Code of Conduct that explicitly states what the expectation on behaviour within the conference shall be and where abuses of this can be reported in a safe and confidential manner.

Where possible, consideration should be given in conference budgets for grants to remove barriers to equal participation and representation. There should be funds allocated and available to address support identified in the accessibility statement or flagged by those requiring special assistance in attending the conference.

Time in the main conference schedule should be made for discussion of diversity issues, including an update on progress and approach.

An Acknowledgement or Welcome to Country is required and promotes an ongoing connection to place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and shows respect for Traditional Custodians. It is ANSTO’s expectation that, at a minimum, there is an Acknowledgement of Country at the start of events hosted in or from Australia.

ANSTO will not participate in or support conferences that do not meet these standards.
