2024 Eureka Prizes Finalists announced

After hundreds of hours of deliberation, 55 individuals and teams have been selected as the finalists in the 2024 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes.

UNSW Night Time Solar

The UNSW Night Time Solar Team has demonstrated groundbreaking technology that allows for the generation of solar power even at night, tapping into the energy radiated from the Earth’s surface as it cools down after sunset. The key is a semiconductor device that harnesses thermal infrared radiation to produce electricity.

Associate Professor Aaron McFadyen has developed new world-leading drone management technologies. In collaboration with aviation authorities and industry, these technologies are now embedded in automated flight planning, assessment and approval processes for drone operations. This has enhanced safety, efficiency and utilisation of airspace in Australia and overseas.

About the Eureka Prizes

The nation’s most comprehensive science awards will this year offer a total of 18 prizes across the categories of Research and Innovation, Leadership, Science Engagement and School Science. Featuring the ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology, these awards have recognised and celebrated some of Australia’s brightest minds and game-changing innovations.

Established in 1990, 508 Eureka Prizes and more than $4.5 million in prizes money have been awarded since they started. ANSTO has supported the Australian Museum for the Eureka Prizes awards since 2011.

Presented annually in partnership with some of the nation's leading scientific institutions, government organisations, universities, and corporations, the Eureka Prizes raise the profile of science and science engagement in the community by celebrating outstanding achievement.
